Magic of Makgabeng

The Makgabeng Plateau is a large area of un-spoilt wilderness with a rich history scattered all over the rock faces and overhangs of this magical mountain.

Starting at the foot of Thabananthlana (mountain with a sharp point), one can get a closer look at what transpired just over a 100 years ago during the war between the BaHananwa and the then ZAR Government under Paul Kruger. The thick white lines on the walls of a small overhang tells the story of a chief captured by his enemies, and carted off to jail on a train , along with hundreds of women and children. Not too far from there, another gem. This one, much older, a shamanic San painting, depicting San Shamans, in the process of divination.

If time permits, your trip is not complete unless you take a mild hike through mountain gorges to admire the unique rock formations and abundance of life this mountain sustains. At the end of the hike you are rewarded with yet another of the more than 800 Rock Art Sites found here. The “Phiri Shelter” is home to a glorious fresco of Hananwa, San and Khoi Khoi paintings , carefully layered on top of each other. The site is particularly associated with Traditional Sotho initiation rituals for young boys, a tradition still practiced today.
